The Green Gathering Charity is being set up to take forward the spirit of the old Big Green Gathering and provide a new model for working together and hosting events. The objectives of this new charity are:
To advance education for sustainability by promoting global ecological understanding, local biodiversity, appropriate technology, the arts, alternative media and human rights and equality with an emphasis on providing an environment of growth and learning for young people.
To do all or any such other things as may be deemed incidental or conducive to the charity’s objectives and in particular to support initiatives in sustainable energy sources, ecologically benign lifestyles, sustainable food production and the responsible use of resources; to provide young people with the opportunity to express their creativity on renewable resource platforms; to be a forum for debates in which issues may be discussed openly and without intimidation; to act responsibly to customers, contractors and workers, and to promote health and safety in our activities; to work as a group and with other organisations in co-operation wherever possible; and to promote equality of opportunity in our employment and access policies.
The charity model was chosen to open up avenues of funding unavailable to us in the past and thereby help us to share more widely the great wealth of knowledge and experience we hold as a community. In order to deliver on its objectives, the charity will commission an annual Green Gathering event which will be delivered on behalf of the charity by a production company. As a result, any financial deficit incurred by the event will not affect the Green Gathering charity and it will not be liable for any debts. Not only will the charity be able to fund-raise for elements of the Gathering, it will also be entitled to any financial surplus generated by the event. The 2011, 2012 and 2013 events were put on by the production company Optimistic Trout in order to keep the gathering going until the charity could be set up.
In the process of becoming a charity, we initially had to set up a company (The Green Gathering Company). In order to register with the Charity Commission we had to show an income of £5000 which was kindly donated to us by a private individual. We are now in the process of registering with the Charity Commission.
Anyone wanting to become involved with the Charity can become a member. The membership being offered is an Associate Membership. This is a non-voting membership but nevertheless will offer input and direction to the Trustees (and thereby the Gathering) in line with Charity Commission guidance. The current Board of Trustees is made up of volunteers who are committed to delivering on the charity objectives. Funds raised through membership will be used solely for the purpose of administering the charity (i.e., phone, internet, insurance, etc…).
Associate Membership will have an initial registration fee of £20 for individuals with family membership available at £25, group membership at £30 and statutory organizations at £50. The annual renewal fee will be £10, £12, £15 and £25 respectively. Concessionary rates are available upon request and Big Green Gathering shareholders get the first year free. 18 year olds and under are eligible for free membership.
